What is an Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB)?

RRFBs are flashing signs that are activated when a pedestrian clicks the button located of the body of the sign. The light flashes just underneath the yellow sign on both sides of the road.

They are used as a resource for pedestrians to get across somewhat busy roads. The RRFBs on Baseline (shown right) have exclussive orange flags to warn drivers that a pedestrian is crossing. They are also equipped a slight chirping noise that helps the visually impaired get across the road. One of the two RRFBs on Baseline has a sign in the middle too as a type of mid-block separator.

What is a Mid-block Separator?

Mid-block Separators are located in the middle of crosswalks. They are very common for RRFB crosswalks. They are also called median islands or refuge islands. Baseline has a type of mid-block separator (shown left). Although it does not allow pedestrians a safe island to stand on, it brings more awareness to drivers on the road.

 Indian Peaks Neighborhood

Both kids were residents of Indian Peaks Neighborhood, a small neighborhood on the border between Boulder and Lafayette. The neighborhood is a close community that will occasionally host holiday events. After the accidents, parents formed a group to convey their beliefs to the City Council. They have so far gotten more signage in the area.
